The teaching of children is one of the most important aspects of their development. But not all kids learn in the same way. Understanding how a child prefers to obtain and retain knowledge is crucial to putting them on the path to success.
For many children, the world around them is a kaleidoscope of colors and information. A visual learner thrives on the information provided to their eyes. Colors and shapes have more meaning and therefore provide that mental “stickiness” that greatly improves retention. Being able to see a completed example of a task, or the color coordination of notes can really improve a visual learner’s educational experience.
Ever wondered why you so easily remember the words to your favorite song? Or why children are taught an alphabet song instead of just straight memorization? This is due to the power of auditory learning. Being able to tie information to a melody, rhythm, or song allows the student to more easily comprehend the knowledge and therefore recall it at a later date. Children that fall into this style often have a love of music.
The old classic of note taking and study. This is one of the most tried and true methods of teaching due to the simple fact that it works. While it may not be the ideal learning style for all children, it can be a great asset to everyone. A learner that thrives in this style will actively take notes while reading, a means of drilling that information into their own mind.
Sometimes you just need to get in there and get your hands dirty. A physical, or kinesthetic, learner excels in comprehension by execution. These are the builders, the chefs, and the athletes. Children of this learning style may have a tendency to dive in head first and figure it out later. Regardless, these learners are always ready for the next challenge so long as they can get their hands on it.
Knowing your child’s learning style can greatly impact their success in school. At the Super Scientist, we engage in different activities that help learners of all strengths, which gives each child the unique experience they need to thrive.
