For years the sacred four totems of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics stood alone. These titans of knowledge were placed above all others upon idolized pedestals. Eventually, some within the STEM community began to question if the big four were the only true players of the knowledge game. It was then that the little subject that could, art, came strolling onto the scene. Providing a whole host of wonderful advantages that work harmoniously with the rest of STEM, it is no wonder that many people consider art to be a staple in both childhood and adult learning.

The Mind of An Artist

Creativity is one of the core powers of the arts. The ability to visualize something from nothing and apply it. From the canvas to the page and everything in between, the power of art is limitless. It was for this reason that art’s integration into the STEM curriculum made so much sense. Science teaches us to question everything around us, but art provides the lens to search for the answers. Outlandish hypotheses and creative solutions to complex problems would not be possible without the utilization of art.

Could We? Should We?

While many people think of art as things such as creative writing and musicianship, the arts also include many social studies. Studying the human condition and how we are all connected is vital to progress within STEM. The problems of society today are the goals of various scientists and engineers of tomorrow. In addition, the study of subjects like ethics can also help to ensure that all discovery and progress does not come at cost. STEM has the power to effect great change on the planet, and the guiding human hand of art helps to direct said change.

With Our Powers Combined

Like the great 80’s cartoon hero Captain Planet, every power needs some heart. The four various elemental forces are powerful and devastating on their own, but combined could be disastrous. But, with a little heart they are a strong force for good. At the end of it all, art provides the heart that STEM needs to reach its greatest potential. Art acts as the connective tissue between all of the other four branches, and gives learners of STEAM the fluidity to move from one subject to another.

At the Super Scientist, we incorporate creative and artistic projects to ensure our little scientists can explore all of their strengths. Whether your child is a whiz on the piano or an enthusiastic dancer, there is a place for them to thrive in our holistic STEAM program.
