Becoming a parent is probably the hardest job any one of us will ever take on in our lives. It requires constant sacrifice, attention, and effort, and there is rarely a break from the mental and emotional demands. While it is also the most rewarding responsibility we take on, it can wear us thin of our patience and energy some days. As a parent, the important thing is not to be perfect, but rather to never give up in trying to be an exceptional role model for our children. Our attitude and ability to grow from our mistakes plays a crucial role in how our children will develop as adults.
Think of your child as a mound of clay to be molded, not by your words but by your actions. They will parrot what you do and through that will develop their own attitude. Patience is a virtue that most of us need to practice more often. The power to stay calm and cool under pressure is vital for success is all of life. Showing your little one that mom or dad does not get hot under the collar will pay dividends down the road. Being able to take a breath and continue moving forward is a skill that can only be taught by you as a parent.
The world we live in today can be a harsh one. A constant barrage of negativity and bad news can really drain a person of their happiness. Being able to process the darkness and still wake up each morning looking toward the light will help your child greatly. Showing your little one that it is okay to feel sad is also vital, but that believing tomorrow will be a little better is also important. Do not complain to your child about the world around you, be optimistic for everything around. Happiness and optimism are infectious and once they take hold…there is no cure for joy!
As people, we thrive on the feeling of success. The desire to finish a goal and cross something off of a list is thrilling. As a parent you should always be striving for your child to learn the fun of goals at an early age. Sharing with your little one the goals that you have and how you are working towards them will instill a sense of accomplishment in them. Be it as something as small as finishing a new book to something as paramount as getting a new promotion at work. Show them that we are never done growing as people and they will be set up for future success in everything they put their little mind’s towards.
